Description: Family Health Centers of San Diego, Barrio Communities (“FHCSD Barrio Communities”) consists of a 4-story, 78,515 square feet multi-use clinic and office building with rooftop access for public events, as well as a large adjacent parking garage.
FHCSD Barrio Communities includes a clinic which will include clinical and program space, examination and treatment rooms, pediatrics & development assessment area, a bio-metric lab, physical therapy rooms, a demonstration kitchen, space for health education sessions, conference/training rooms, and other social services. The clinic is anticipated to serve 7,500 unduplicated patients annually of which 80% are expected to be low-income persons.
A key component of FHCSD Barrio Communities is the expansion of the Laura Rodriguez Research Institute, which will house physicians, scientists, public health experts, and evaluation staff dedicated to studying the impact of social determinants of health on low-income communities. This initiative will bring life-saving clinical trials and integrative medical care to historically underserved populations, promoting better health outcomes through education, research, and holistic treatment approaches. By integrating research with patient care, the institute will foster a deeper understanding of the role that exercise, nutrition, emotional balance, and family support play in long-term health. Through targeted interventions, the FHCSD Barrio Communities aims to reduce hospitalizations, lower reliance on specialty care, and create a vibrant center for engagement and wellness in Barrio Logan and beyond.
FHCSD Barrio Communities represents a critical investment in one of San Diego’s most underserved communities, furthering Family Health Centers of San Diego’s mission to provide comprehensive, accessible healthcare while also delivering significant economic and social benefits to local residents.
Family Health Centers of San Diego, one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers in the country, has spent decades expanding its network of primary care medical clinics, dental clinics, behavioral health facilities, outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, mobile medical units, and other essential healthcare services across San Diego’s low-income communities. In line with its commitment to addressing the broader social determinants of health, Family Health Centers of San Diego has also expanded its scope beyond primary care into health research, housing, and workforce development. FHCSD Barrio Communities represents the latest step in that evolution.
